Twenty-Four Explanatory Subjects

A book-level component of the Theory of Biblical Patterns challenge

The theory concerns more than numerical relationships in one sentence. It also asks whether the published work containing a competing sentence presents a broad, coherent account of origins, physical reality, life, consciousness, and the order observed in nature. The 24 subjects below define this book-level requirement category.

Formal status: TBP-154 through TBP-177.

Each of the 24 subjects is one documented requirement within the current total of 290. A submission must satisfy every requirement in this category; passing only some of the subjects is insufficient.

The requirement

The genuine published book from which a competing sentence is taken must provide a substantive naturalistic explanation of every subject below. The challenger must identify the book and edition and provide a page number or stable electronic location for each explanation. The approved three-judge panel must unanimously agree that each cited passage directly addresses the stated question, accurately represents relevant evidence, and does more than dismiss or rename the issue.

Judging standard

  1. The work must address the actual subject, not merely contain related vocabulary.
  2. The explanation must distinguish established evidence, proposed models, open questions, and philosophical interpretation.
  3. A claim of probability must state the model, assumptions, alternatives, and method used to calculate it.
  4. A scientific explanation need not change a judge's personal religious or nonreligious beliefs.
  5. Passing means adequately addressing all 24 subjects under the published standard; it does not require proving a worldview beyond every possible doubt.
  6. The comparison work must predate the challenge or have been independently published; it may not be assembled or altered specifically to pass.
Scope: These are 24 explanatory subjects, not 24 statistically independent mathematical patterns. Several are related, and some concern active research or philosophical questions that may not have universally accepted answers. The purpose is to compare breadth and explanatory treatment fairly—not to describe every unresolved question as proof by itself.

The 24 Subjects

TBP-154 — 1. Why there is something rather than nothing

Required explanation: What does the work propose as the ultimate origin or basis of physical reality, and how does it use the word “nothing”?

The explanation must distinguish philosophical nothingness from a quantum vacuum, a mathematical state, or a physical field, all of which possess defined properties.

TBP-155 — 2. The origin of spacetime, matter, energy, and physical law

Required explanation: How does the work account for the existence or emergence of spacetime, matter-energy, and the regularities called physical laws?

This question is related to Subject 1 but focuses on the origin of the framework and contents of the physical universe.

TBP-156 — 3. Apparent fine-tuning and selection effects

Required explanation: How does the work evaluate claims that physical constants and initial conditions occupy a life-permitting range?

Acceptable treatment must discuss the assumptions behind any probability estimate and may examine selection effects, deeper physical laws, multiverse proposals, or other explanations. No unsupported numerical probability is built into this requirement.

TBP-157 — 4. Dark matter

Required explanation: What evidence motivates dark-matter models, what candidate explanations exist, and what observations or experiments could distinguish them?

The requirement is not to manufacture dark matter on demand, but to explain the evidence, current models, limitations, and tests.

TBP-158 — 5. Dark energy and accelerating expansion

Required explanation: What evidence supports accelerated cosmic expansion, and how do proposed dark-energy or modified-gravity models account for it?

The explanation should separate observed expansion history from the still-debated physical nature of dark energy.

TBP-159 — 6. Zero-point energy

Required explanation: What is zero-point energy in quantum theory, what observations are associated with it, and what remains unsettled about its physical interpretation?

The topic should not be treated as equivalent to an experimentally available limitless energy source.

TBP-160 — 7. Claims of quantized redshift

Required explanation: How does the work evaluate reports that astronomical redshifts occur in preferred intervals?

The discussion must address the data, statistical methods, selection effects, independent replications, and competing interpretations. See the site's quantized-redshift discussion.

TBP-161 — 8. The flatness problem

Required explanation: Why does the observable universe appear spatially close to flat, and how well do proposed cosmological models account for that condition?

The discussion should acknowledge that inflation was proposed in part to address this problem while allowing critical evaluation of inflationary assumptions.

TBP-162 — 9. Cosmic inflation

Required explanation: What evidence and theoretical motivations support inflation, what problems is it intended to address, and what unresolved issues or alternatives remain?

TBP-163 — 10. The origin and abundance of carbon

Required explanation: How is carbon produced in stars, and why does it exist in quantities compatible with complex chemistry and life?

The explanation should include stellar nucleosynthesis and may examine whether the relevant nuclear resonances constitute fine-tuning or follow from deeper physics.

TBP-164 — 11. Abiogenesis

Required explanation: What evidence-based pathway does the work offer from prebiotic chemistry to self-maintaining, replicating, and evolving systems?

Modern observations that organisms arise from existing organisms do not by themselves prove or disprove possible chemical origins before cellular life existed.

TBP-165 — 12. The Cambrian diversification of animal life

Required explanation: How does the work account for the timing, causes, fossil record, developmental changes, and ecological setting of the Cambrian diversification?

Unsupported claims about prearranged particle spins or invented probability values are not part of this requirement.

TBP-166 — 13. Radiocarbon background, limits, and contamination

Required explanation: How do radiocarbon laboratories determine detection limits, measure instrument background, pretreat samples, and identify contamination?

A valid response must distinguish genuine sample radiocarbon from modern contamination, laboratory background, and measurements near the method's practical limit.

TBP-167 — 14. Consciousness and awareness of being

Required explanation: How does the work account for subjective awareness, cognition, personal identity, and their relationship to physical brain processes?

A scientific account of consciousness and the theological concept of a soul are related philosophical topics but are not identical claims.

TBP-168 — 15. Measuring the age of the universe

Required explanation: How is the universe's age inferred from observations and cosmological models, and why do estimates change when measurements or model parameters improve?

Revision of an estimate is not by itself evidence that the scientific method has failed; the work must evaluate uncertainties and model dependence.

TBP-169 — 16. Counts of supernova remnants

Required explanation: How do astronomers predict and observe supernova remnants, and how do visibility time, survey sensitivity, dust, distance, environment, and catalog definitions affect the number detected?

No fixed count such as “only 205” is assumed without a named catalog, date, region, and selection rule.

TBP-170 — 17. The cosmological-constant or vacuum-energy problem

Required explanation: Why is the observed cosmic acceleration scale so different from simple theoretical estimates of vacuum energy, and what proposed resolutions exist?

This is related to fine-tuning but is retained as a distinct, specifically defined cosmological question. Numerical claims must identify the compared quantities and assumptions.

TBP-171 — 18. From prebiotic systems to the first cells

Required explanation: How could membranes, metabolism, information storage, replication, and heredity become integrated into early cellular systems?

Cell theory describes existing cellular life. This subject asks how the earliest cell-like systems could have arisen and therefore complements Subject 11.

TBP-172 — 19. The spiral-galaxy winding problem

Required explanation: Why do spiral arms persist despite differential rotation, and what roles do density waves, bars, tidal interactions, recurrent structure, and star formation play?

TBP-173 — 20. Blue stars and short stellar lifetimes

Required explanation: How do stellar formation, mass, evolution, lifetimes, and galactic environments account for the existence and distribution of hot blue stars?

The challenger must address a clearly defined astronomical claim rather than merely refer to a “blue-star problem.”

TBP-174 — 21. Reported carbon-14 in coal and dinosaur material

Required explanation: How should reported carbon-14 measurements from coal or dinosaur-related samples be evaluated?

The response must identify the actual samples and laboratories and examine pretreatment, provenance, uncertainty, detection limits, instrument background, and contamination controls. A video assertion without these records is insufficient evidence for either side.

TBP-175 — 22. Mathematical order in the Mandelbrot set

Required explanation: How does the repeated complexity and self-similar structure of the Mandelbrot set arise from its simple iterative rule, and what philosophical conclusions, if any, follow from that mathematical order?

The mathematical derivation and the inference of an Intelligent Designer are separate questions and should be evaluated separately.

TBP-176 — 23. Biomolecular and soft-tissue-like preservation in dinosaur fossils

Required explanation: Under what chemical, mineral, burial, and environmental conditions can altered proteins or soft-tissue-like structures persist in ancient fossils?

The findings are legitimate research subjects, but “soft tissue” must not automatically be interpreted as unaltered or recently living tissue.

TBP-177 — 24. Apparent coincidences and regularities in the laws of nature

Required explanation: How does the work account for striking mathematical relationships, symmetries, conservation laws, and apparent coincidences found in descriptions of nature?

The challenger must explain the specified relationship rather than merely call it a coincidence. Conversely, an apparent relationship is not automatically evidence of design; selection effects, mathematical necessity, units, and the number of opportunities searched must be considered.

This page defines a comparative explanatory requirement. It does not claim that the presence of an open scientific question, by itself, proves or disproves a Creator. The theory's theological inference and the scientific status of each subject should remain open to explicit, evidence-based evaluation.
